‘Made You Look’ is a visual celebration of talented black chefs at all levels, who work in some of the country’s best restaurants – yet many of them are unknown.
Each portrait is visually striking, designed to surprise the viewer and stop them in their tracks, with a burst of colour that’s indicative of the black culture. The aim is to prompt a reaction (“Wow, I didn’t know that”), as well as being an invitation to look beyond the frames, to find out more about these chefs, their stories, and what it has taken to get to where they are.
The change-the-world goal: to inform and to raise awareness, drawing attention to brilliant chefs the world needs to know more about. The project poses a strong question, too: why don’t the restaurant industry, food media and broader food world shine a light on these chefs, all of whom are doing amazing things? AND (most importantly) to inspire the next generation to look at these images and say “If they can do it, then so can I.”
